Windows Installer FAQ
What is Windows Installer?
Windows Installer is an installation and configuration service for software
programs. Developed by Microsoft, Windows Installer provides a mechanism to install,
configure and uninstall applications on your PC.
How do I discover which version, if any, is on my machine?
Examine the version of MSI.DLL located in your \Windows\System (or
\Windows\System32) folder. If MSI.DLL is not present then Windows Installer is not installed on
your PC.
Versions prior to 2.0 were buggy so it is strongly recommended you update your
PC to at least V2.0. Version 3.0 is now available and is included with Windows
XP Service Pack 2 but you can also
download it separately. Version 4 ships with Windows Vista and is only
available on that OS.
What is an MSI file?
An MSI (short for Microsoft Installer) file contains a Windows Installer
package. The application files you are installing reside inside the MSI file. If your PC
does not appear to handle MSI files you may not have Windows Installer installed.
